God Of War took Game Of The Year at this year’s Game Developer’s Choice Awards, bringing the total number of GOTY accolades the action-adventure title has received to six.
The GDC Awards ceremony was held at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier this week alongside the Independent Games Festival Awards, where the IGF Grand Prize went to Lucas Pope’s Return of the Obra Dinn – as well as the GDC Award for Best Narrative and the IGF Award for Excellence in Narrative.
The finalists for GDC Game Of The Year 2019 were: Sony Santa Monica’s God Of War, Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2, Lucas Pope’s Return of the Obra Dinn, Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Matt Makes Games’ Celeste.
God Of War also bagged Game Of The Year at several other video game award ceremonies – including the D.I.C.E. Awards, the Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, SXSW, and the New York Game Awards. It’s also up for Best Game at this year’s BAFTA Game Awards, as well as receiving nominations in nine additional categories.
All in all it seems that Sony Santa Monica’s soft reboot of an already well-respected franchise has well and truly earned its place in the gaming pantheon.
