A new Star Wars video game was revealed last Saturday during the Star Wars Celebration event held in Chicago. The new game, titled Jedi: Fallen Order, is a strictly single player story-driven experience with no multiplayer features or microtransactions of any kind – and it’s being published by EA.
Jedi: Fallen Order is being developed by Respawn Entertainment, the makers of the Titanfall series and Apex Legends. It puts us in the shoes of Cal Kestis, a padawan Jedi who somehow managed to survive the infamous Order 66, the imperial decree given by Emperor Sheev Palpatine branding all Jedi enemies of the Republic and commanding them to be executed on sight.
The trailer shown alongside the reveal is all rendered in-engine using Unreal 4, not EA’s own Frostbite Engine. The trailer introduces us to Cal and some of the story’s supporting cast, including Cal’s little droid buddy BD-1 and an antagonist called Second Sister – one of the Empire’s elite Inquisitors hunting Cal.
Actor Cameron Monaghan lends his voice talent and likeness to bring the character of Cal Kestis to life, together with actress Debra Wilson portraying a former Jedi Knight who takes on the role of Cal’s mentor. There’s a great deal of emphasis on narrative immersion and what Respawn are calling “thoughtful combat.” They wanted to devise a combat system that was easy to pick up but had “a lot of depth to it.” Thus many of the game’s enemies will have unique abilities and characteristics, forcing players to tailor their approach to each encounter. Some of Cal’s Force abilities will allegedly be of use in solving some of the game’s puzzles too.
Working closely with Disney and Lucasfilm, Respawn have crafted several new worlds for players to explore, including the planet of Braka, where Cal’s story begins. There’s a new type of Storm Trooper too, namely the Purge Troopers – specially trained soldiers whose job it is to hunt down and exterminate any remaining Jedi. According to Respawn these Troopers are not entirely new, having featured previously in some of the comic books of the Star Wars expanded universe.
Jedi: Fallen Order releases on November 15th 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
