YouTube documentary God of War: Raising Kratos is available now to watch in full.
The 115 minute-long feature follows the team at SIE Santa Monica Studios as they undertook the mammoth task of revitalising the God of War franchise. The development of God of War took over five years and the team faced many obstacles and risks along the way – not least of all the decision to explore a side of Kratos that fans hadn’t really seen before. The documentary describes itself thusly:
“Raising Kratos documents the five-year, herculean effort to reinvent one of the greatest stories in gaming, God of War. Facing an unknown future, Santa Monica Studio took a massive risk, fundamentally changing their beloved franchise and re-establishing their rightful place in video game history. More than just a making of, this cinematic journey of second chances rooted in family, sacrifice, struggle and doubt follows game director Cory Barlog and those who chase perfection in art and storytelling. Witness the incredible defeats, the unpredictable outcomes and the down-to-the-wire tension on full display in this true-life redemption story.”
God of War released in 2018 to financial and critical success. It was nominated for many accolades and even took home six Game of the Year awards. God of War differed from other instalments in the franchise by trading its traditional Greek setting for the nine realms of Norse mythology. Santa Monica also put great emphasis on fleshing out the character of Kratos himself, electing to tell a very personal story this time around. It’s a beautifully crafted Father and Son quest that, whilst smaller in scope, is infinitely deeper and more meaningful than any of the narratives that came before it.
If you have the time to spare, Raising Kratos is certainly worth a watch. And if you’ve yet to play God of War I most certainly recommend that you pick up a copy.
