Devolver Digital’s E3 2019 offerings were delivered with their trademark brand of “what the fuck?” as audience members were assaulted with 21 and a half minutes of mocking satire, crass humour, and excessive gore. Instead of a traditional press conference presentation, Devolver instead opted for a pre-recorded video in the style of Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct streams. Part movie, part reveal stream, the shamelessly named Devolver Direct opens with the Devolver devs frantically trying to bring Nina Struthers back from the dead after she was mercilessly gunned down on stage at E3 2018.
With four minutes until they’re due on stage, the team decides upon an emergency plan to host their presentation inside Struthers’ mind. Yeah, I know, and it only gets weirder from there. At one point an alien bursts out of Zane Stults’ chest, ripping him in half – another guy gets his throat ripped out by a disgruntled Struthers. Hijinks aside though, Devolver did manage to show off some upcoming games during the video:
- Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
- Devolver Bootleg
- Enter the Gungeon: House of the Gundead
- The Messenger: Picnic Panic
- My Friend Pedro
Devolver’s E3 2019 presentation was a raw statement about the sort of posturing and insincerity that events like E3 are rife with. It openly mocked the traditional style of press conference as outdated and parodied their cringey, over-rehearsed dialogue. One thing’s for sure, when they’ve got something to say Devolver certainly doesn’t pull its punches.
