E3 2019: Square Enix Presentation

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Square Enix opened their E3 2019 presentation with another new trailer for the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII Remake. The new trailer was a four minute cinematic that allowed us a deeper look into how the story of the 1997 original has been expanded upon.

Prominent narrative devices such as Cloud’s relationship with Zack appear to have been fleshed-out, and supporting characters like AVALANCHE members Biggs, Wedge, and Jesse look like they will get much more screen time in the Remake too.

The trailer also gave us our first look at the FFVII Remake’s Tifa. Tifa Lockheart is Cloud’s childhood friend and a very important character in the game’s story. She’s also a kickass martial arts expert and one of the best characters to have in your party.

The first part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake will launch worldwide for PlayStation 4 on March 3rd 2020.

Kingdom Hearts III: Re Mind DLC

A trailer for the upcoming Kingdom Hearts III DLC, Kingdom Hearts III Re: Mind, was shown to fans during the presentation, giving us a look at the sort of themes and characters the DLC will cover. The trailer appeared to show a playable Roxas and Aqua too, so that’s exciting. Fans won’t have to wait too long to sink their teeth into this one as it’s been given a winter 2019 release window.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers

The launch trailer for Final Fantasy XIV’s Shadowbringers expansion tore onto the stage at Square Enix’s E3 presentation in a blaze of light and foreboding dialogue. The highly-anticipated expansion, which turns the entire Final Fantasy franchise on its head by making the Warrior of Light the big bad, has players adopt the role of the Warrior of Darkness in order to restore balance and harmony. It’s a fantastically interesting concept and a brilliant move by the writers at Square Enix that breathes new life into the done-to-death good vs evil narrative.

Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa Scarlett Grace: Ambitions

Two celebrated JRPG classics are finally making their way to the West in the form of Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa Scarlett Grace: Ambitions. The two games, previously only available in Japan, are coming soon to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius

Outriders

Outriders is the latest project from People Can Fly, the studio best known for developing Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgement. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered

Just when we were starting to worry it would never happen, Square Enix have gone and confirmed that Final Fantasy VIII is finally coming to current gen consoles in the form of a remastered edition. The remastered edition features enhanced textures and character models as well as an updated soundtrack. It will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC later this year.

Marvel Avengers

Crystal Dynamics’ collaboration with Marvel was the finale at this year’s Square Enix presentation. Their Marvel Avengers video game has been in the pipeline for some time now and it was good to finally see it in action. The game will allow you to play as one of five characters: Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, or Iron Man and will follow a completely original story. At the same time though, Square Enix have said key events from the cinematic Avengers universe will be translated into the game’s narrative.

The Avengers themselves do not look like the actors we all know and love, they have been originally designed for the in-game universe and are voiced by an astounding team of talent including both Nolan North and Troy Baker.

The game will follow a live-service model and fresh content will be released for it seasonally at no extra cost to the player. Square Enix have also confirmed that there will be no lootboxes or pay to win microtransactions. The Avengers video game will release on May 15th 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
