Konami Brings Back The TurboGrafX-16 With A Range Of Mini Consoles

Over the last few years we’ve seen a growing number of classic games consoles recreated and rereleased in miniature form, following the trail blazed by Nintendo with the introduction of the NES Classic Edition back in 2016. Konami is set to be the next company to throw its hat into the ring with the announcement of a range of consoles including the TurboGrafX – 16 Mini.

The TurboGrafX – 16 was the US variant of the PC Engine, which was released in Japan in 1987 and was intended to compete with Nintendo’s NES. The PC Engine outsold the NES on the year of its release and went on to garner considerable third-party support. In 1989 an updated version of the PC Engine was revealed called the PC Engine CoreGrafX, which boasted a more powerful GPU and resolved some of the colour display issues of the original.

All three variants of this classic console have been recreated in miniature form, one for each main territory: The TurboGrafX – 16 Mini for the US, the PC Engine Mini for Japan, and the CoreGrafX Mini for Europe. Preorders for all three variants will be available exclusively through Amazon and go live tomorrow. (15th July 2019)

At the time of writing, we were only able to locate the Japanese Amazon preorder page. The range of mini consoles will retail at ¥10500, that’s $97.30 or £77.55 depending on where you’re buying from.

All three console variants will ship with a total of 50 titles built into the box, 24 in English and 26 in Japanese. As a result some of these games will be duplicates, or more accurately, regional variants with “minor regional differences.”
