This week Studio Wildcard announced the next part of the ARK: Survival Evolved saga in a shocking debut trailer – it’s called ARK: Genesis.
What makes Genesis such a big deal is that it is the first narrative-driven expansion in the history of ARK: Survival Evolved, a game which has until now been content to eschew traditional forms of storytelling and instead allow players to construct their own narrative through exploration. Now it seems, Studio Wildcard will be introducing more conventional elements such as NPC characters, cut scenes, and an all-new mission-based gameplay mechanic.
The Genesis expansion will be delivered in two parts, the first of which will launch this December, with the second half of the expansion due Winter 2020.
Genesis will introduce vast new locales to the world, each with new creatures to hunt and tame. Taking centre-stage are a massive lava reptile and an as-yet unnamed critter that can shape-shift from an adorable little floof into a ferocious four-armed werewolf.
Both parts of ARK: Genesis can be purchased as part of the ARK: Genesis Season Pass, which will cost $34.99 or the regional equivalent. Purchasing the season pass will also award players with a little holographic companion pet called HLN-A, as seen in the trailer.
ARK: Survival Evolved is currently 65% off on Steam, so if you’ve been toying with the idea of trying it out, now is probably as good a time as any.
