Sony Acquires Insomniac Games

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a move to purchase California-based developer Insomniac Games, making it the 14th company in the SIE Worldwide Studios family.

Insomniac Games are best known as the developers of the recently successful Marvel’s Spider-Man, which sold over 13 million units worldwide on PS4. Many of us will also know them as the developers of classic 3D platformers such as Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet and Clank. Other notable projects in Insomniac’s portfolio include the Resistance: Fall of Man trilogy and 2014’s Sunset Overdrive.

Once the sale of the company goes through, Insomniac will continue to be run by its current management team in conjunction with Sony’s internal studio in San Mateo, California.

“Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled,” said Shawn Layden, Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios.

“We have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.”

Insomniac Games was founded back in 1994 as Xtreme Software by Ted Price, who is still the company’s CEO today. The company has two studios: Its original headquarters in Burbank, California and a smaller studio in Durham, North Carolina which opened in 2009.

“Joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people’s lives,” said Price.

“We’ve enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel’s Spider-Man was a testament to this. We’re excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our long-time WWS partners. Most of all, we look forward to delivering fresh, new experiences for our fans.”
