At this this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live, Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima treated hungry fans to not one, not two, but three new trailers for the highly-anticipated Death Stranding. Kojima’s first project since his exit from Japanese developer Konami, Death Stranding is an enigmatic and psychologically-thrilling journey through post-apocalyptic America.
Tomorrow Is In Your Hands
“After the collapse of civilization, Sam Bridges must journey across a ravaged landscape crawling with otherworldly threats to save mankind from the brink of extinction. From legendary game creator Hideo Kojima comes an all-new, genre-defying experience for the PlayStation 4 system. Starring Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, and Lindsay Wagner.”
A Journey to Reconnect a Fractured Society
“In the near future, mysterious explosions have rocked the planet, setting off a series of supernatural events known as the Death Stranding. With spectral creatures plaguing the landscape, and the planet on the verge of a mass extinction, it’s up to Sam Bridges to journey across the ravaged wasteland and save mankind from impending annihilation.”
Death Stranding will feature many supporting characters, each with their own story separate from the main plot. The first two videos shown at Opening Night Live introduced us to two of these characters: Mama (Margaret Qualley) and Dead Man. (Guillermo Del Toro)
The third video was a gameplay clip, showcasing the game’s UI, quest system, and many other features. The clip opens with Sam sleeping rough in the wilderness, then getting up to urinate on the grass before heading towards a waypoint in the UI. At the waypoint Sam finds a delivery terminal, where he hands over some Lost Cargo and turns in a quest to a holographic Geoff Keighley. The gameplay video also demonstrates how Sam’s actions can affect his BB (Bridge Baby) and how he will have to interact with it in order to soothe it.
Kojima stated that the aim of the game is to establish connections with other survivors. Sam must travel from East to West, banding together the fractured cities and peoples of the former USA. Along the way Sam will face threats both natural and supernatural, everything from the environment itself to terrorists to otherworldly beings known as BTs.
Kojima closed by saying that while he cannot announce anything now, there will be many people who cameo in the game like Geoff Keighley. Kojima promised that he would share more of Death Stranding at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, which runs from September 12th to 15th in Chiba, Japan.
Death Stranding will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4 on November 8th 2019.
