The first launch title for the upcoming PlayStation 5 has been announced. Godfall is a third-person “looter-slasher” currently being developed by California-based studio Counterplay Games.
Developed in Unreal Engine 4 and due to be published by Gearbox Publishing, Godfall will be a PS5 console exclusive but will also be released for PC via the Epic Games Store.
At the 2019 Game Awards Gearbox showed a reveal trailer for the game, all captured in-engine. It didn’t give much away, but it did introduce us to three armour-clad heroes (whom I can only assume are our protagonists) facing-off against a fearsome three-headed beastie as the surrounding architecture crumbles around them.
Counterplay’s ambitious game is described as a AAA-quality, third-person, real-time melee game that is “played better together with friends.”
In a press release, Keith Lee (the creative director of Godfall and CEO of Counterplay Games) said of the game: “We’re innovating with Godfall to provide a fresh take on action-RPGs by rewarding skill-based offensive gameplay and making every hit matter. Namely, we want to feed into that yearning for the next best piece in your character build, so we plan to provide plenty of loot to players to ensure there’s meaningful impact to gameplay and play styles.”
Godfall is set to release alongside the PlayStation 5 in Holiday 2020.
