Alongside the reveal of the Xbox Series X at this year’s Game Awards, Microsoft announced that Ninja Theory’s acclaimed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is getting a sequel.
The footage for the Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II announcement trailer was captured entirely in-engine on the Xbox Series X, making it our first look at the upcoming console’s power in action.
The original Hellblade was released back in 2017. It was created by a talented team of just 20 developers and received multiple accolades and awards for its narrative structure, as well as the quality of its facial motion capture and the outstanding performance of Melina Juergens – the actress portraying the game’s protagonist.
The story follows Senua, a Pictish woman who travels to Helheim in order to retrieve the soul of her betrothed. The game blends traditional action adventure mechanics with ingenious environmental design to immerse the player in a grim tale of madness and despair.
During development, Ninja Theory consulted with mental health professionals and individuals with personal experience of conditions such as schizophrenia to weave a powerful message into the narrative. The end result is really something quite unique, which will leave you wondering how much of Senua’s ordeal was actually real, and how much was the manifestation of her mental anguish.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and the Xbox Series X are currently set for a Holiday 2020 release.
